Forest School Spring Term 2

W/B 28th February 2022: Despite some rough weather this week, we have still managed to get out into the Outdoor Learning Area and look for signs of Spring.

We found frog spawn in our pond which we have placed some in Class 1 and 2 for the pupils to observe.

A variety of flowering bulbs are now up, the Hazelnut trees have catkins on them and new buds are showing on the Beech Trees.

This week we have been looking at Seasons. A brief understanding of why we get seasons (the earth’s spin axis being tilted) and the the impact on the weather and outdoor environment.

The pupils made a “year in the life of a tree” model and made a seasons wheel to show when each season is within the year.

This week all classes have been looking at Narcissus (the Daffodil) which was brought to Britain by the Romans in about 300BC as they thought it had good healing properties.
Alas it is actually poisonous in the sap.
This time of year it is abundant in the hedgerows and verges and is one of the first signs of Spring. The pupils have been dissecting the flower and identifying parts of the daffodil and learning about each part. Class 3 and 4 have then wrote an Acrostic Poem about daffodils after hearing William Wordsworths famous poem.
Class 1 and 2 have been making their own daffodils to bring home.

This week we continued to learn about fire lighting. After re capping on the fire pyramid and three elements needed for fires we then looked at making a campfire. The pupils gathered plenty of “rats tail” kindling and “finger” sticks to make the fire with.

For Class 1 and 2 they were given a demonstration on how to make a basic “Teepee” fire. We looked at alternative designs including the “Lean To” fire for windy conditions and the “Star” fire.

Class 4 had a go in small groups at collecting wood and making a fire. It was a mixed effort with some groups failing to get the fire alight !

We then made dough twists on the fire. An unleavened style bread that you wrap around a stick and then enjoy after cooking with some jam spread on it. Yummy !
