On Monday some of our pupils were treated to an Apple Day to celebrate the crops of apples that we have grown on our trees within the school grounds.

They learnt about the history of apples and how it was turned into juice and then even cider. About 100 years ago almost all farms in Devon had an apple crush and produced their own cider that they then paid their farm staff each day with. About 2-3 litres a day was about the going rate! Also that back in the 18th century it was deemed safer to drink cider than the water…..

Last week pupils had picked a mixture of green and red apples off our trees. So on Monday we used a masher to crush and pummel all the apples up before using an apple press to extract the juice. We were successful in getting almost fourteen litres of fresh apple juice that was served to all our students in the dining hall at lunchtime.

In addition, Bobbie in the kitchen had used a batch of our red apples to make a yummy apple crumble served with custard for lunch.
